Hands-on Reading Projects

This Google Slide presentation includes links to Google Docs templates that students can use to complete projects as well as links to other websites where projects can be completed digitally. Daniel Day, a Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood
It’s a beautiful day in the neighborhood! We were disappointed that Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood Live was cancelled, so we made one special day all about him and his friends... but really, isn't every day a Daniel Day? We sing his songs all day long!
We watched Daniel Tiger shows,
read Daniel Tiger books like Day and Night and What's Special at Night?
as well as Daniel Tiger 5 Minute Stories.
played Bingo and Welcome to Main Street game,
used the Color Wonder pages and markers,
sang his songs,
added stickers to his ABC book,
We even found backgrounds to print for more character play and Colorforms (put them in sheet protectors or Ziplock bags if you don’t have a laminator). Ugga Mugga!

Bitmoji Bookmark Project
Looking for a fun way to motivate students to read or summarize what they've read? This project is so fun! The purpose of this project is to encourage kids to check out books that they may not have considered in the past. They will also get to know the names and faces of the classmates in the classroom or building. This is a great project for virtual or remote learning and to motivate students to read during the summer or all year round.

Projects like these work best when students are preassigned page numbers. For third graders and for teachers working remotely, I suggest having the teacher type student names underneath the "Recommended by" so there aren't arguments over who is typing on each slide. One requirement I had was that students could not repeat books, so it was motivating to complete bookmarks before anyone else could "steal" their ideas.
